ERA Award 2009 - Category Secondary Resources and Equipment - using ICT

Write OnlineDuke's Choice Award from Sun Microsystems

In May 2008, WriteOnline was announced the winner of the Duke's Choice Award at the JavaOne Conference in San Francisco, California.

The Duke's Choice Awards program recognises the year's most influential Java technology-based applications submitted by developers and companies around the world. The winners are chosen by Vice President, James Gosling, along with a panel of Java technology experts at Sun Microsystems.

Here is what David Bryant, senior director of Java marketing at Sun, had to say:

English-Speaking Union President’s Award, 2008

esuWriteOnline has been announced as the ESU President's Award winner 2008. HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh will be presented the award in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

The ESU President’s Award is given annually for innovation in the use of new technologies to enhance English teaching and learning worldwide. The judging panel is chaired by Professor Margaret Buck OBE, former Head of Central St Martins College of Art and Design and includes experts from the fields of language, design and technology.

The panel judged that “the resource is interactive, empowering and educationally useful.” Continuing to describe WriteOnline as “empowering the learner to develop and progress their skills in English.” It was further stated that WriteOnline creates a learning environment for the beginner writer and enables teachers to adapt authentic materials to be of use to learners of varying levels.
